Every year we receive holiday cards from our wonderful family and friends. We LOVE getting pictures of everyone and always enjoy hearing about what people have been up to. The only problem… we always feel terrible throwing your lovely faces in the trash after the holiday season ends… and I’m certainly not going to just keep Christmas cards up year round people! I WAY to OCD for that craziness!
Our solution: CUT THEM UP!!!!!!!! In a nice way of course.
Normally, Eric and I have glass coasters that have picture inserts that we put the cut-up pictures into, but I’m just not fully satisfied with the coasters anymore and the inserts keep seeming to fall of the backs (future DIY re-do for sure!). So, this year, I knew I needed to come up with a solution before too long. Then, it came to me! My girl Mindy over at Finding Silver Linings shared her way of displaying the cards during the holiday, and it got me thinkin’…
I’ve had a vintage, made-over antique window frame chillin’ in our garage that Eric’s cousin gave to us and I’d been trying to think of the perfect way to use it. THIS WAS IT! On one of our many Lowe’s trips, I snagged some picture hanging wire!
At home, I gathered some left-over wedding ribbon (yes, two years later, I still have left-over crafting material from our wedding), scotch tape, scissors, and staple gun. With all the supplies in hand, I got started. This is what I did:
1- Staple picture hanging wire at desired locations on the window frame, ensuring enough excess to fold and twist to secure. I ran two wires all the way across the window frame, and after noticing a bit of sagging from the weight of the pictures, I secured the wires to each “post” of the window frame with some additional staples
2- Cut and tie ribbons to desired length on wires
3- Tape and secure pictures onto wires
Voila… ALL DONE! THIS WHOLE PROJECT COST ALL OF $3!!! Wahoo!!!!!! And we now have one more wall hanging and we get to see all your pretty faces year-round!
Now, this little beauty just needs to find a home! We’ve got a spot in mind, so I’ll update ya’ll once the change happens!
ANYONE ELSE KEEP THEIR CHRISTMAS CARDS IN SOME FORM THROUGH THE REST OF THE YEAR? OR DO YOU WANT TO JUST CALL ME OUT AS A TOTAL DORK!?!?!
Linking up…

YAY! Thanks for the link love, Ash! I love the window panes & ribbon. I actually cut my niece’s card up to crop her face & framed it! I also saw an idea on Pinterest (shocker, I know, lol!) and took phone pics of friend’s photo cards and use them as the pic that pops up when they call my phone
Too much time on my hands clearly…
Of course! Thanks!
Oh… I LOVE the idea of taking cell pics and using them as the caller ID photo! Too cute!
(Pinterest is a well-documented shared addiction!)
Good for you for actually DOING something with them!
Thanks Elisa!
It’s fun to enjoy them year-round!
LOVE that my kiddos are on the blog and in the frame!
They have an entire section of it and the most pics of anyone on there!
Love your kiddos!
very cute idea! I actually cut ours up and put magnets on the back on them to stick on the fridge! I always feel bad throwing out the picture ones! Now we have them up all year.
…. the picture part. lol
This is adorable! I love it in white and you’re so smart to cut off the “holiday” bits and just keep the gorgeous pics. Great idea!
Thanks so much Liz! It’s always a good feeling to have family and friends photos around.
Totally! Plus we spend so much money on those photos & printing – it’s nice to know they can have a second life. Great idea! If you haven’t already, you should enter it into the Craftbaby frames sweepstakes: http://www.craftbaby.com/contests/2/fabulous-picture-frame-sweeps
We have yet to do holiday cards, but that is exactly what I think- people spend so much and I’m just NOT ready to stop looking at their beautiful faces!

So pretty! I usually just stash my Christmas cards away (sorted by year) so I can take a look at them the next year to see what’s changed. But this is a project I’ll have to keep in mind!

It’s tons of fun and so flexible. I love it!
