My Awesome Wine & Beer Tasting Birthday Party

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, my birthday didn’t just consist of a weekend getaway; Eric and my mom spearheaded a proper party celebration with some help from my friend Rachel.  Now, this wasn’t a surprise party by any means, but this was my first birthday celebration in my adult life that I didn’t have a hand in planning!  For this control-freak/former event-planner… this was foreign territory!  In the end, it was almost like a surprise party!

IMG_3054

Eric took the lead to get the ball rolling.  He hacked my email account and sent out an Evite to the people he believed I’d want there!  How sweet is that!!!  I seriously had 43 printed pages of contacts in my personal gmail account and he went through each and every one!  If that’s not dedication and love, I don’t know what is!!!

IMG_3047

Then, he broke down the details of the party.  I had mentioned that a wine tasting party sounded fun, so he took that and ran with it!  After some discussion with my mom, they decided to do a wine and beer tasting party since some the guys are big wine drinkers! In the Evite, Eric and my mom told all the women to bring their favorite bottle of wine ($15 limit) and all of the men to bring a 6-pack of their favorite micro-brew!

Then, he decided to make things a competition!!!  Ya, we get competitive up in this house on birthdays!  After all… this is a “tasting” and what’s the point of a tasting if you don’t have a winner!  We even had official score cards and bought prizes for the winners!

IMG_3070

Eric, my mom, and Rachel took care of the food. But seriously, I was so pumped about the party that Eric let me help with the menu planning and food prep. :) It was sooooo fun! I tried several dishes that I’d never made before!!!  Our main goal with food was to not be cooking during the party, but to enjoy ourselves!

The menu included:

  • DIY easy-peasy pulled pork sandwiches (crock pot full of pulled pork and buns on the side- easy and scrumptious)
  • Grilled ham and jalapeno muenster cheese paninis with fresh fruit (blueberries ad raspberries)
  • Gourmet cheese and cracker plate
  • Bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip
  • Basil, mozzarella, and cherry tomato skewers, sprinkled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar
  • Rolled asparagus with cream cheese and salami (you’ve got to try this!)
  • Chips and Meyer Homemade Salsa (this is serious business around here)
  • Chips and homemade onion dip

Unfortunately, no pictures were taken of the food before the devouring began, so you’ll just have to appreciate the goodness of the food via half-eaten pictures…

The party was set for 6:30 pm and guests arrived on the nose. Honestly, I was overwhelmed by the turnout. The party was planned to be a smaller, intimate gathering of my closest friends and family, but we ended up having about 30!  I definitely felt the L-O-V-E!

As for the tasting competition, everyone had a blast and was super diligent about filling out their score cards.  But… I think there might have been some competition “fixing”… ;)

And here were the lovely winners! Becky and Greg took it home… (slightly suspicious since they’re a couple… hmm…) ;)

Sometimes life is just too busy and you don’t get to spend the time you’d like with all of your family and friends.  This party was a simple reminder to us of just how fortunate we are to have such amazing family and friends.  I love each and every one of you and you made my day more special than you could have ever imagined.  <3

In the end, the party was a smashing success!  There were smiles and laughter all around and the party didn’t shut down until about 2amWhat can I say… people were having a good time!

Again, I couldn’t be more thankful for our many blessings, particularly our family and friends.  You all make our lives wonderful!

Special thanks to my amazing husband, my do-it-all momma, and my wonderful friend Rachel for making it all happen!  I think we might have just found my annual birthday tradition!!! :D

I’LL MAKE SURE AND DO A FOLLOW UP POST ON HOW TO THROW A SUCCESSFUL TASTING PARTY AND WHAT OBSTACLES WE RAN INTO! :)

Travel, Celebration, Inspiration, Love

Ok, I suppose my tardiness is a dead giveaway since I noted above that this was a birthday and anniversary getaway and your heard about our anniversary here.  Well.  Forgive me.  This post just hasn’t seemed to write itself.  BUT, here it is. On a platter. Just kidding… that is my cake. :)

IMG_2993

Our anniversary and my birthday are exactly one week apart, and my birthday happens to almost always fall on Labor Day weekend, so inevitably, we try to take a little trip each year to commemorate both moments.  This year, we went to beautiful Monterey, CA.  Not only is this place a beautiful example of the California coastline, but it also happens to be home to the infamous 17-mile drive, on which Pebble Beach Golf Course sits… ya, it’s that infamous.  People pay to drive for 17 miles.  Where else do you get that?

Anywho, the weekend couldn’t have been more amazing.  This is going to sound bad, but while driving there, Eric and I realized that the last time we went out of town by ourselves was for our “mini-honeymoon” on Labor Day weekend two years prior.  Talk about ridiculous.  Couples out there reading this… don’t. do. this.  Not that we’re having issues or anything, but the weekend quickly taught us how desperately we needed a weekend away alone and how much we need to make the mini-getaways more of a priority!  Seriously people, mini-trips like this really don’t have to cost much at all, so there is really no excuse! I mean… look at these smiles!

IMG_2995

So, you ask, how did we spend our glorious weekend away?  We relaxed, we ate, we biked, we walked, we shopped, we wine tasted, we gawked at amazingly stunning (way-out-of-our-price-range) houses… just basically put that track on repeat!  And, in the end, it couldn’t have been more perfect!

Here are some pics from our glorious (and much needed) weekend away!

Can I please be rich?!?!? Just kidding… I am quite happy where we’re at! You know that sad reality is that most of these homes didn’t even have people in them… makes you totally wonder why! Seriously though, even if someone told me “take your pick,” I really don’t think I’d be able to choose!

Normally we spend a full day with back to the sand and face to the sky, but it was too chilly to chill this time. So, a nice walk on the beach had to do. Sand-time, next time.

You know you think we’re sexy in our red and hot yellow! ;) Seriously though, the views don’t get better than this. We can’t wait to go again. It just might be our favorite place to bike- not super challenging, but the views are breathtaking! Oh ya… and apparently we are bicycle self-portraitists!

Thanks for coming along our ride!

TOMORROW I’LL BE SHARING HOW A FEW WONDERFUL PEOPLE PUT TOGETHER AN AMAZING WINE TASTING BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR ME! Pretty lucky, huh!

ANYONE EVER BEEN TO THE MONTEREY/CARMEL AREA AND/OR ENJOYED THE 17-MILE DRIVE? TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT!

Would you do it? I did… but I might be crazy!

A while back I posted a little shopping trip of mine and highlighted a rug I really wanted for our front living room.  The benefits of this rug over what we have is that it’s soft, 100% wool, neutral, and ties in all of our neutral colors in our home!

Picnik collage

In all honesty, the rug is simply perfect for us and I was 100% planning on buying it at some point, but at nearly $300, it just wasn’t in the immediate plan…

IMG_2293

IMG_2294

Until I spotted it in the “As Is” section at Ikea!  (sorry… these are cell phone pics)  The only problem was that the rug was absolutely awfully dirty!  I mean… how does this happen (you’ll see how below)!

2011-10-01_15-36-19_589

And… just in case you can’t really see just how dirty the rug is, here’s a close-up view of the corner where the rug’s sticker used to be… dirty, huh???

2011-10-01_15-29-58_157

Now, I’m sure you’re asking WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD I BUY THIS FILTHY RUG? FOR THE CHALLENGE OF COURSE! OH YA… AND THE PRICE!!!!!!

It was marked at $140, and while that may have been an okay deal, this rug was going to need professional cleaning. So, I talked to the manager of the as is section and she marked it down to $99. Still unsure if I wanted to spend the money for a rug I wasn’t sure I could get clean, I walked away. The next day, I returned and the rug was still there. I then talked to the manager of the day, and he marked it down to just $55! THAT’S RIGHT, I SCORED THIS RUG FOR ONLY $55!!!!!!!  Part of the reason this manager was so willing to mark down the price was because the rug had been there for a while, and it happened to be a past floor sample… and I just so happened to have a picture of it as a floor sample from a past shopping trip…

I SERIOUSLY MADE MY HUSBAND PROUD! GO NEGOTIATION!

SO THE ULTIMATE QUESTION NOW… WOULD YOU HAVE DONE IT???  ANYONE MADE A PURCHASE THAT EVERYONE THOUGHT YOU WERE CRAZY FOR?

Master Bedroom Progress- A Healthy Dose of Eggplant

I might be equally excited about our master bedroom progress as I was about the pantry overhaul yesterday!  I’ve been dying to make headway on our master bedroom ever since this post, but have had a heck of a time finding anything that fit my vision, except for my awesome chrysanthemum chair.

After listening to all the feedback in my long-ago post about our master bedroom, I had pretty well settled on the blue walls, cream/taupe as my neutral color, and eggplant-toned purple as our accent.  While we loved the peacock pillows and chair in our master with our chocolate throw, we just loved those items even more in our living room… so back they went!  The only problem with my choice, was actually finding purple “anything,” unless I wanted lilac!  Seriously, I couldn’t even find dark purple pillar candles or bed sheets!  Crazy!!!

My jumping off point was dying our amazingly comfortable Calvin Klein sheets that happened to be a textured green color.  After the initial dye, they were what I lovingly referred to as “fluorescent purple.”  Ok, they weren’t quite that bad, but they definitely weren’t what I was hoping for.  Knowing that the fight wasn’t lost, I set out and purchased more dye (I may or may not have sat on Michael’s floor in front of the dye options, researching color combinations on my phone… thank goodness for smartphones)!  I successfully found that dying a purple item with navy blue would accomplish the eggplant-toned purple I was hoping for.  Just in case though, I bought another purple bottle of liquid dye too!  I got home and immediately set into the process, trying the 2nd purple dose first, and when the depth of color wasn’t reached, I threw in the navy blue!

Picnik collage

Much better! Now, with the sheets finally the way I wanted them… it’s time for a bedding reveal…

Pantry Overhaul Without Spending a Dime

Have you ever completed a project that you were literally so excited about and pleased with the results that it simply seems surreal?  I know this sounds completely ridiculous, but this is the only way I can describe my pantry overhaul… SURREAL!  We went from cluttered, clustered, and crazy TO orderly, organized, and efficient.

Picnik collage

I literally have been dying/planning to reorganize our pantry since we moved into our home almost two years ago.  Unfortunately, I just never really set aside the proper time for the project and really didn’t know how long I could expect this seemingly impossible/overwhelming task to take.  So, guess what happened… you guessed it… it got put on the back burner, while we tackled other projects.

Now, you ask, what was the turning point in getting this project done?  Having four parties in one summer and realizing how inefficiently set up our pantry was, as well as a few other cabinets in our kitchen.  Also, I finally found a day where I could set aside a large chunk of time to tackle the project without interruption.  To accomplish this huge task, I formulated a quick plan and got started!

Here is what I did:

1- Empty ever single thing out of the pantry.

IMG_3140

2- Wash and dry all of the shelves in the pantry (and walls and floor).

3- Sort all emptied items into their respective “categories”: (1) appliances; (2) food; (3) drinks (mixes, teas, etc); (4) alcohol; (5) “does not belong in pantry”; (6) donation pile of items no longer needed/wanted; and (7) garbage pile.

IMG_3147

IMG_3146

4- Evaluate items with the following criteria: (1) amount of items in category; (2) frequency of use; and (3) type of use.

5- After analyzing the items, I pulled together all of the containers that were in the pantry before and grabbed their lids that were stored in another room (because I was a dumby and wasn’t using the containers with lids to their full potential).  Then, I snagged a wicker basket that wasn’t being used and a cheap-o document storage box that was hanging out in the hubby’s home office (not attractive, I know… BUT, it won’t be staying for long).

6- Once all needed supplies were collected and items analyzed, I began placing all of the items into the containers and into the pantry.

Picnik collage

7- Once all of the containers were in their place, I labeled each container using my handy-dandy chalk pens! (they didn’t work perfectly, but since I loaned my label-maker out a few years ago and never got it back… and haven’t bought a new one, they were the next best thing for no cost).

8- The pantry quickly took shape and I turned my attention to the lower cabinets below our “side counter” area of our kitchen where I reorganized the remaining items into their new homes.

Picnik collage

All-in-all, for a “no purchase pantry organization,” I could NOT be happier! All of my serving dishes are in one spot, on one shelf. Food and drinks can be easily accessed. Appliances are securely tucked away under the cabinets, except for a few frequently used items that are now on the top shelf of the pantry. Alcohol is in one spot and out of reach for children. Our cook books are now held up by a spare bookend we had laying around. Our frequently used items (rice, brown sugar, regular sugar) are now housed in our handy black air-tight containers. And finally, our water bottles and coffee mugs are now being corralled by the box at the bottom of the pantry! Yay!

IMG_3165

I’m still planning to replace that super attractive cardboard document storage box with something snazzier… maybe a matching, but larger clear container like the ones on the shelves (from Ikea for only $4/box with lid), but for now… nothing beats a clear vision of what you’ve got!  I will likely also need to resolve the labeling issue and get some real labels that can’t be wiped off with your hand or smeared with water. :)

Can you believe we went from this…

Picnik collage

to this…

Picnik collage

In the end, this project cost $0 and took approximately 3.5 hours of top-of-your-lung singing fun (obviously I was home alone!). But, seriously though, I actually keep opening my pantry door to make sure it was real!  I’m so excited to be enjoying the fruits of my labor (Eric likes it quite a bit, too)!

We Have Internet… after 8 hours of install…

For some reason, I really DON’T think it should’ve taken 8 hours to install our new internet and cable (not exaggerating), BUT, I’m just thrilled to have internet again!  And, might I add, i purchased triple-the-speed this time!  It made uploading photos and blogging sooooo much easier tonight!

Anywho… a jaw-dropping no-cost organization/makeover coming tomorrow!  So excited to be back!

Goodnight!
~Ashley
