Today’s guest post is from Cait at Hernando House! While Cait just so happens to be one of my blogging BFF’s, she also has some of the most inspiring design boards that I’ve seen in this lovely blogosphere… Not to mention the fact that she’s like a one-woman design encyclopedia! Not. Kidding. If I can’t find something, I know just where to go… Cait! In addition to her amazing memory and design sense, her and her hubby Robert have been working their way through their bright and boldly colored home! If you haven’t checked out Cait’s amazing blog/knowledge-base, you better get over there asap so you don’t miss anything!
Here’s Cait to share her awesome, fun, and unique porch with us!

Hey y’all, I’m Cait from Hernando House. I’m so excited to be guest posting today for Ashley! I know that Ashley & Eric have done quite a few curb appeal projects this year, so I thought I might tell you about one of the curb appeal projects my husband Robert and I took on this summer. We did a lot of work to our front porch, but one of my favorite aspects of the overhaul is the porch ceiling. Robert actually gets all the credit for this, because I was working crazy overtime when he tackled this. Basically all I did was pick out the new color and light.
Not a true “before”, as Robert had already pried some trim off- oops.
The starting point was a peachy-salmon colored ceiling (which felt very low and closed-in), sporting asymmetrical trim (to hide the seams in the drywall), a HomeGoods lantern we turned into a porch light pre-blog, and far more dead bugs than I care to think about. Robert pried the trim down using a razor knife & a screw driver, then added a few more screws to reinforce the drywall.

After everything was secured better he caulked the drywall seams.

Then he took down the old light and sanded the edges of the old layers of paint to help give everything a smoother, more seamless look in the end.

Followed by a lot of spackling and more sanding.

Then he taped off the ceiling and rolled on two sample cans of Valspar Grand Hotel Mackinac Blue (we had originally picked another color, but changed our minds after taping some paint chips to the ceiling and staring at them for a while).

Then the tape came down, and I helped him put up the new light.

It’s a cheerful addition and you catch a glimpse of it when you pull up in the driveway now.

Thanks so much to Ashley & Eric for having us! And I hope you’ll stop by our blog to check out what else we’ve been up to!

Isn’t that a fun porch! Those tiles totally stole my heart with their blues, greens, and yellows! Maybe it just reminds me of the color in our house… I dunno…
So… what are you waiting for??? HEAD OVER AND CHECK OUT HER BLOG AND BE PREPARED FOR INSPIRATION OVERLOAD!
PS- Stay tuned tomorrow for another amazing guest blogger’s before and after post!

Thanks for such a warm introduction and for asking me to guest post, Ashley!
absolutely! Soooo glad to have you Cait!!!
I love that blue, especially the close-up of it when you show the new light. Is that true to real-life? Jeal. Good tutorial on fixing it up!
Yep, that’s true to life! Thanks Emily!
Amazing! It looks like it has a twinge of teal/green in it and that, I love. I found a quart of paint in the OOPS bin that’s a similar-but-not-exact color about a year ago and never found a use for it besides mixing it into those dots that used to be on the sunroom floor.
I’m so in love with the light blue-greens right now! It’s my take on Haint Blue.
Grand Hotel Mackinac reminds me a little of the (discontinued) Summer Sorbet from the Seaside Retreat line that I used in the hall bath (and the guest bath before we demoed it). I want to paint our bedroom ceiling blue next, and at some point the back porch ceiling is getting redone & painted blue.
Love it – both porches tied together with the blue will be striking!
Thanks Emily!
That blue is so pretty!!
Thanks Michelle! I’m pretty much obsessed with that shade of blue now, and trying to figure out where else to paint with it! haha
It’s the prep work that always gets me when I really just want to beautify. Good job on prepping and finishing. Not as easy as it sounds, huh? Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
Thanks Jo! You’re right, the prep work is what soemtimes puts a damper on an otherwise simple project.
