Organize Fruit with a Plant Stand

To fuel our healthy living, we’ve been buying tons and tons of fruit.  The reality is that when you buy lots of fruit, a regular ol’ fruit bowl just won’t suffice- no one wants to have to take out all of the bananas and apples to get to the cuties at the bottom of the bowl.  Ridiculous, right?  On top of that, our fruit bowl was simply not our style.  It is fine for an occasional serving dish, but it lacked the beauty required to be a real “display” piece in our kitchen. Now, in truth, I’ve been looking for the “right” fruit display for at least six months, with no luck.  I wanted simple, but fun, and modern, but with a bit of vintage inspiration.  That’s not too specific, is it?  I don’t know… maybe I’m hard to please.  This is what I was working with: I know, it wasn’t that bad, but the organization was what really bothered me!  Digging for fruit is not exactly what I call fun and you run the risk of beating up your fruit before you get the chance to eat it.  Double bad.  So, I was determined to find a solution. The solution came when my friend and I were perusing our local Ross store.  In the plant section, I found this three-tiered stand, and at a mere $12, I couldn’t pass it up!  Not only was it modern, but it was simple and the three tiers offered the perfect amount of space and division to accommodate our fruit habit! Now, did I give you enough pictures of fruit? Guess I really like the new display! WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE ORGANIZED LATELY? Blog this! New Toys in the Meyer House

After a month of pinchin’ pennies, we thought it was high time that we spoil ourselves with some new toys.  So yes, we splurged!  In the very few days since our no-spend challenge ended, we bought a DSLR camera, a DeWalt power tool set, and a Scotch laminator.  We feel really lucky to have saved enough to buy these items because we’ve been wanting and needing them for a while! Want to know exactly what we got and how much we paid??? Here ya go! Nikon D3100 Camera Kit- $700 @ Costco The kit came fully loaded with two lenses, an instructional video, instruction booklet, and carrying case.  Costco was running a major sale and this camera kit was marked down from $900 to $700.  I’ve been watching cameras for a while… like over six months!  After some hardcore comparison shopping between Canon and Nikon, and some advice from my wonderful blogging friends (Cait at Hernando House and Michelle at Décor and the Dog), I decided to go with Nikon because I simply got more for my money, especially with the sale! Eric and I are absolutely hell-bent to learn the ins and outs of this camera, so we can take some killer pics for our house!  Hopefully, between the included video and all the tips I’ve pinned on Pinterest, I can figure it all out and look like I half-way know what I’m doing! DeWalt 4-Tool 18volt Cordless Combo Kit- $198 @ Lowe’s This tool kit was a total score!  Originally $398 at Lowe’s, it was marked down to $198 and while we initially passed up on buying it, we quickly realized our stupidity and returned the next day and made the purchase!  The kit included a compact drill/driver that delivers 410 unit watts out of maximum power, an … Continue reading

Master Bathroom Updates

Our master bathroom has been a long source of shame in our household.  It was terribly ugly and nasty when we moved in, and besides an extremely thorough cleaning and a quick coat of beige on the walls, it really hasn’t received much attention.  Part of the reason that this room has been put so far on the backburner is that we plan to do a full gut of the bathroom and start from scratch.  The basic RENOVATION PLANS include: DIY-built double vanity Removal of the junky soaking tub Build out a huge walk-in shower for two people Change out standard window for a really long and high window Removal of carpet (seriously, who puts carpet in a bathroom?!?!? c’mon people!) Installation of fun tile/stone floor Removal of “hollywood” light bar Installation of new light fixtures Vanity mirror dress-up Install pocket/bi-fold door for entry to closet Lots of plans, right?!?!  Exactly!  That’s why we just haven’t gotten to any of them.  We’re thinking that our bathroom will likely be last on the list to get attention because we are the only ones who use it, and it functions perfectly fine.  But, since it will likely be a while before any serious work gets done in there, I figured I should at least make a small effort to bring it up from completely shameful to at least passable, especially since there is no visual separation from the master bedroom! As paint was really all that had been done, my next steps involve getting accessories! Fun stuff!!! As you may have read in my earlier post, I had quite the ordeal finding just the right bath towels, but for now, I am completely happy with my selection.  After I settled on the towels, I scoured the shelves of multiple Ross, Marshalls, and … Continue reading

How to Make Sure Guests Don’t Come Back

Over the recent holiday weekend, Ikea happened to have daily deals, one for each day!  I love Ikea’s daily deals for multiple reasons: 1) usually there’s awesome stuff for next to nothing; 2) it makes it a lot easier to convince the hubby to make a “quick” trip to Ikea because we need to snag the deal before it’s gone; and 3) because I generally get to make a quick pass through other fun parts of the store!!! So, where am I going with this? Well, here’s the deal… I’m ashamed to say this, but our poor guests have been sleeping on what I refer to as “sandpaper bed sheets” ever since our guest room was relatively set up.  You see, at our old place, we had a cute bedding set, and when we moved into our home just over two years ago, the bedding’s color scheme no longer went with the, now, guest bedroom/my office.  Because of this, we had to change the bedding, including the sheets.  In a rush to put the room “together” to accommodate a few immediate guests when we first moved in, we snagged some plain white cheap-o sheets at Target to act as a placeholder until we worked our way through the room more and knew better what we wanted.  Unfortunately, having sheets apparently meant that we didn’t have to think about it anymore… even though they were “bad” sheets.  Truth-be-told, we’ve never had a complaint about them and our guests keep coming back for regular visits, so it must not be that bad… but every time I washed them, I had this slight tinge of guilt that I just wasn’t treating my guests properly.  I have a guilty conscience, what can I say… Anyways, ever since I snagged the awesome $40 deal for … Continue reading

How to Make Towels More Absorbent

Seriously… someone tell me, please, because I’m super frustrated!  The story… I’ve been searching for the perfect bath towels for our master bathroom and I finally found them!  That’s right, Cost Plus World Market to the rescue!  But, they were actually $14 per towel, which I think is totally ridiculous, so I didn’t buy them.  It was kind of a bummer, but then I was over at my mom’s house, which happens to be two blocks from a World Market, and she starts telling me about some towels she scored on clearance at World Market!  I almost had a heart attack thinking that my precious, perfect-for-me towels could have been clearanced and gone without my ever knowing about the sale!  We immediately strapped on our deal boots and marched right over there! And then… there they were… 50% off!  And, it was just my luck, they had four bath towels and four hand towels.  Perfect!!!  I snagged them up, paid, and happily strutted back to my parents with my mom chuckling behind me.  Once home, the towels were an even more perfect fit stylistically than I had thought! Now, here is where the problem comes in…. THESE TOWELS PUSH WATER, AND DON’T ABSORB ANYTHING!!!  That’s right, instead of absorbing the water, the towel acts as a giant squeegee and simply pushes the water around your body and on top of that, THE TOWELS LEAVE LINT ALL OVER YOU!!! What’s a girl to do… I’m seriously contemplating returning the towels, but because they are exactly what I wanted, I am pulling out all the stops to make them truly perfect- i.e. no more squeegee affect or lint trail.  What exactly does “pulling out all the stops mean?”  It means doing some Googling and asking you lovely people! So, please tell me… … Continue reading

Recent Purchases

During a few of my recent shopping adventures, I was able to snag a couple of beloved new pieces for our home.  Since I’m not making any major purchase right now, most of these items are simply little accessories to liven up some spaces, and for me to build upon as we grow our décor. First up… this little beauty!  I really don’t know what it’s officially supposed to be, but to me, it’s a beautiful, unique piece that I can dress up with flowers or dress down with candle light.  Either way, I can just stick a clear vase in the center, insert the desired “mood” and call it good!  Gotta love versatility!  I seriously LOVE its simple beauty and the vintage nod in the cutout pattern and the bit of rustic glam with the lantern-like handle. Next, this little monochromatic tray had me at hello… is it Ikat? is it southwestern?  I really don’t know, but I DO KNOW that I love it!  The blue’s are a perfect compliment to our home and even though I had no idea where it would end up, I knew it was coming home with me! Then, a collection of 8×10 frames for $7 or less was certainly hard to pass up!  The black and white one might get a coat of spray paint at some point, but for now, they will just chill in my collection until I decide how I want to use them. As for the silver-plated herringbone frame… I’ve got a special place in mind for this one for sure!  (PS- I totally did NOT notice the herringbone pattern until I got home, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with it!) Last but not least is the gold, floor-length mirror.  This mirror was love-at-DIYers-first-sight- and only $15!!!  I … Continue reading
