Master Bathroom Updates
Our master bathroom has been a long source of shame in our household. It was terribly ugly and nasty when we moved in, and besides an extremely thorough cleaning and a quick coat of beige on the walls, it really hasn’t received much attention. Part of the reason that this room has been put so far on the backburner is that we plan to do a full gut of the bathroom and start from scratch. The basic RENOVATION PLANS include: DIY-built double vanity Removal of the junky soaking tub Build out a huge walk-in shower for two people Change out standard window for a really long and high window Removal of carpet (seriously, who puts carpet in a bathroom?!?!? c’mon people!) Installation of fun tile/stone floor Removal of “hollywood” light bar Installation of new light fixtures Vanity mirror dress-up Install pocket/bi-fold door for entry to closet Lots of plans, right?!?! Exactly! That’s why we just haven’t gotten to any of them. We’re thinking that our bathroom will likely be last on the list to get attention because we are the only ones who use it, and it functions perfectly fine. But, since it will likely be a while before any serious work gets done in there, I figured I should at least make a small effort to bring it up from completely shameful to at least passable, especially since there is no visual separation from the master bedroom! As paint was really all that had been done, my next steps involve getting accessories! Fun stuff!!! As you may have read in my earlier post, I had quite the ordeal finding just the right bath towels, but for now, I am completely happy with my selection. After I settled on the towels, I scoured the shelves of multiple Ross, Marshalls, and … Continue reading

How to Make Towels More Absorbent
Seriously… someone tell me, please, because I’m super frustrated! The story… I’ve been searching for the perfect bath towels for our master bathroom and I finally found them! That’s right, Cost Plus World Market to the rescue! But, they were actually $14 per towel, which I think is totally ridiculous, so I didn’t buy them. It was kind of a bummer, but then I was over at my mom’s house, which happens to be two blocks from a World Market, and she starts telling me about some towels she scored on clearance at World Market! I almost had a heart attack thinking that my precious, perfect-for-me towels could have been clearanced and gone without my ever knowing about the sale! We immediately strapped on our deal boots and marched right over there! And then… there they were… 50% off! And, it was just my luck, they had four bath towels and four hand towels. Perfect!!! I snagged them up, paid, and happily strutted back to my parents with my mom chuckling behind me. Once home, the towels were an even more perfect fit stylistically than I had thought! Now, here is where the problem comes in…. THESE TOWELS PUSH WATER, AND DON’T ABSORB ANYTHING!!! That’s right, instead of absorbing the water, the towel acts as a giant squeegee and simply pushes the water around your body and on top of that, THE TOWELS LEAVE LINT ALL OVER YOU!!! What’s a girl to do… I’m seriously contemplating returning the towels, but because they are exactly what I wanted, I am pulling out all the stops to make them truly perfect- i.e. no more squeegee affect or lint trail. What exactly does “pulling out all the stops mean?” It means doing some Googling and asking you lovely people! So, please tell me… … Continue reading

Get Organized: Use what you got, Bathroom Edition
As mentioned in this post, we’ve officially set sail on our organization plan. I’m slowly making my way through some smaller areas in the house, and first stop (after filing of course) was the area under my bathroom sink! EEK! This is what I started with: I pulled everything out, took the containers that were already in that space and switched them up. The cold medicines, nail polishes, and extra makeup fit way better in each others’ baskets rather than their own! No new purchases needed! Sometimes it is truly amazing what you can do with what you’ve got on hand! I also took the miscellaneous extra makeup bags and put all of them together inside the largest one (the pink one below)… makes complete sense and I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner- it saved TONS of space and clutter!!! After everything was cleaned out, I got it all organized and put it all back, with the most frequently accessed items in the front. All-in-all, I would LOVE to build a more functional vanity, or get/make some more effective shelving for the vanity, but for now… this works! A few key pieces to my FREE organization success: group liked items- not only does it make things visually more appealing, but it also makes things easier to find use baskets you already have on hand- I had three of different heights and sizes reevaluate container usage- sometimes a container is the appropriate size at first, but your needs change over time… change your containers when this happens OR purge unneeded items! (I swapped the contents of all three baskets for a much better result!) frequently accessed items should be immediately accessible- no “digging” allowed for those items! Anyone out there super organized in their bathroom? Have a favorite … Continue reading

Pretty Potty? Accessorizing Toilet Areas
I really like the word “potty” better than the word “toilet,” so we’re just going to have to go with it! So, Eric and I did a clean up on our bathroom right after we bought our house, which included lots of wall patching, paint, cleaning, and adding hardware (towel racks, robe hooks, and towel rings). All this was fine and dandy, but the toilet area was left with no usable space and absolutely NO color. And, you all know how much I despise a lack of color! So, I’ve been pondering ways to add color to this space, including fabric window treatments and wall decor. Then, on one of my many trips to Target, I spotted the matching shelf on clearance for only $12! And, because sometimes I like to keep things consistent, I decided it was too good a deal to pass up. BUT, the only problem… it sat. in the box. for like four months. LOL… This never happens! Just kidding, we’ll be the first to admit that sometimes it’s those little projects that just slip under the radar! Well, last week we made a commitment to get some of those nagging to-do’s done before Eric’s Party. In the end, this is one of the ones we accomplished! Pathetic… I know. Here’s what the potty looked like before: Here was the process: Yes… that’s me drilling the holes… with straight hair! See… Placed the molly bolts Secured the brackets Placed the shelf and tightened the securing screws Here’s what the potty looked like after the shelf was installed: … fairly lonely huh… it still needed a little something… After the necessary added color: We re-purposed some of our wedding decor, colored-glass lanterns for storage- one for a linen-scented candle, and the other for (yes … Continue reading

Updated Whole House Tour
Hey guys. I feel very fortunate to be participating in a wonderful linky party over at A Bowl Full of Lemons – The Parade of Homes. If you haven’t already checked out Toni’s blog, you should! It’s full of tons of fun challenges that are worth a gander, and the linky party is full of amazing inspiration! To celebrate this wonderful linky party and amazing blog, I’ve officially updated a long-overdue home tour. Feel free to check out the updated tour below. After this, I promise to try and keep the Home Tour tab updated as best I can as we go… so check back for updates when you can! The “stats” on our Home! Track Home Built in 2003 2300 sq. ft., single story! 4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms VERY Open Floorplan Disclaimer (LOL): The following “before” pictures are just that… very “before,” taken when we first bought the house. As mentioned in our About Us, the house was a short sale that needed a ton of TLC, but it had the bones/floorplan we wanted, so we bought it anyways, figuring we could do most of the work ourselves and get it all up to our standards!!! We’ve now been in our house about a year and a half, which sounds like a long time, but when you are DIYing almost everything, progress is not always speedy! As such, “progress” pictures are simply posted as we go, but you can check out our “goals” for our home at the bottom of the About Us page if you want an idea of where we’re going with it all.
