The Power of Arrangement

Sometimes, you look at a space and it just feels blah.  There’s nothing particularly offensive about the space and it serves its purpose, but it just leaves you feeling a bit lackluster.  That is exactly how I feel about the media niche in our family room.  While I have grand plans for what the media niche will become, until I have the time and money to carry out my vision, I am left with a piddly DVD shelf, woven basket that holds all of our throw blankets, and TV stand.  I’m sure many people would be happy to have them and I DO appreciate their functions, but in the end, this are irks me.  I want it to be soooo much more. So, the other day while I was picking up the house, I got a wild hair to rearrange some things!  I know, I know… totally never happens to me!   Truth be told, the rearrangement came about while I was in the process of concocting a Craigslist/Yardsale plan to purge our house of things that we don’t love.  (Eric has yet to fully come on board with this idea, but I’m hoping to convince him with numbers… yes, I am halfway through drafting a “this is what I’ll sell and how much I’ll get… and this is what I’ll buy and how much it will cost” list!  Once composed, I’m going to plan my attack and convince him!) Teeheehee… ok, back to the issue at hand. After a quick move of the basket, I realized that it looked a ton more balanced!  Then, I decided to make the best of the DVD shelf and dress it more like a formal shelf with pictures and knick-knacks.  After putting a little lipstick on the pig, I felt a bit better!  … Continue reading

Living Room Inspiration: Shades of Blue & Green

Lately I’ve really been thinking about switching up our living room and family room.  I’ve planned on bringing our leather sofa back into the family room and getting a new smaller cream sofa for our living room, but I might just make some changes first without spending any money.  The reason… I want to make sure that I really like the family room the way I have it mentally pictured before I go buying the replacement sofa for the living room. The basic idea is to do some sofa-swapping and to inject a bit of blue and green into both spaces and give the rooms a bit more flow!  To really solidify my mental image, I decided to put together a little inspiration post of beautiful blues and greens. Image Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 I’m absolutely loving the bold pops of colors off of the neutral furniture, and I am particularly in LOVE with the painting in the last picture, especially how it beautifully blends the colors! NOW… let’s see if I can convince the hubby that this change needs to happen this weekend!  I’m not promising anything, but there may be bribes involved! Black Friday Scores! TVs and Tools!

Yup, we were throwin’ bows to get some deals for Black Friday!  We made our list, checked the ads twice, and were ready to rock!  As our first ever Black Friday Adventure, we feel like we did a hell-of-a-job!!!  We figured, if nothing else, it would be good entertainment.  BUT, in the end, we scored the exact deals we were hoping to get!!! At Target, we were completely in it for TV’s!  We specifically went to get a 46″ LCD on sale for a rock-bottom price of $280!  What?!?!? Crazy, I know!  The store opened at midnight, so we got there at 9pm.  We thought we were plenty early, but apparently NOT!  When we got in, they were out of our TV’s and only had 40″ LCDs left for $260.  Still not a bad deal, but not exactly what we wanted.  Though, afraid we’d miss the deal, we grabbed two (one each)! After we grabbed the TV’s, I ran to the TV mounts and grabbed two for $50 a piece… and they were the last two on the shelf!  Then, as we headed for the check stands, I saw the family that was immediately in front of us in line, and they had a 46″!  I was distraught!  So distraught, that I asked them how they scored the TV, thinking they go the last one… Not. The. Case. They told me that someone decided they didn’t need two and gave the extra one to them!  I told Eric to stand by the carts, I was heading in!  I set out on a mission to “get” a 46″ TV!  I prowled through the store, looking for the right person, and sure enough I found her!  She was standing there, kind of aimlessly with one 46″ TV in her cart.  Then, I … Continue reading

Ever fall in LOVE with a room all over again?

Getting ready for Eric’s Party, we thoroughly cleaned the house, and paid particular attention to the family room, where people tend to gather when we have parties at our house.  In doing so… I literally hand to take a step back.  It was like I was looking at our family room for the first time.  I felt overwhelmed by my love for this room.  LOL… I’m a total dork! But, seriously, when cleaning the room, we decided to pull the rug further under the couches in order to keep a free and clear walkway to the slider.  Something about this process and change gave the room a completely different feel for me.  Ok… maybe this is just one of those… “you had to be there moments!”  I’m going to just stop babbling and let y’all sneak a peak at the change. Look… a clear walkway… All. The Way. To the Slider. Like… really clear! Thoughts?  Doesn’t it look inviting or is it just me?  Anyone else crazy like me and have a room in the house that they just can’t get enough of? Blog this! “Quick” Lamp Update & Design Fail Turned Design Success

Our family room really hasn’t been featured much on the blog (except for here) but it is absolutely the space we spend the most time in.  Unfortunately, the only lighting in the room is our sleek and modern ceiling fan that we bought shortly after we moved into our home.  Other than the light from the fan, we have only one lamp in the room… but that lamp is equally sleek and modern lamp, and chills over on the end table between our couches. While this lamp was more or less fine as it was, for some reason, it just wasn’t fitting our style.  In particular, I just wasn’t a fan of the light wood base and the lamp shade looked like an oversized cone… YUCK!  Anyways, shortly after joining the blogosphere, I saw tons of lamp re-dos that I fell head over heels for.  So… I thought… I can do that! LOL Well, suffice to say that my mistake was trying to do a quick re-do without fully thinking through the style, design, colors, etc. that I wanted.  Instead I just dove right in, grabbed some random blue spray paint (knowing it wasn’t the right one to use on fabric), dark wood stain, and some fine grit sand paper. I took the lamp apart and got to it.  I sanded down the finish on the wood.  With a can of dark stain, I applied three coats to the fresh wood until I reached the color I wanted. Then I prepped the lamp shade to paint.  Well, this was mistake number two.  I sprayed painted on paper on the lawn at dusk.  Let’s just say that the little nats went crazy on the lamp shade and got stuck all over in the paint. First coat done. Second coat done. Result … Continue reading

Living Room Tour – HOUSEography

Back for more fun… Melissa’s HOUSEography House Tour Linky Party is continuing into the Living Room!  This is actually our family room, but we already blogged and shared quite a bit about our more “formal” living room, so we thought we’d take the opportunity to share where we spend 99% of our time!  YUP… we’re casual people!  Hope you guys enjoy the quick tour.  We love this space, but it is by no means complete.  So it will definitely morph as time and projects progress. Here’s the view from our Family Room into the kitchen and towards the entry way.  We originally shared this picture as part of our Kitchen Tour. We plan to eventually create some kind of storage/shelving unit in this area to maximize space and functionality. And some details… Hope you guys enjoyed our little tour! If you didn’t catch my last post about Melissa at HOUSEography, here are the details… HOUSEography is a great blog written by Melissa, an adorable attorney by day and DIY diva by night!!! (Since I am in law school, I totally look up to her!) To check out other entries, you can go to HOUSEography. Melissa also has a full schedule posted for the House Party Linky Tour, here. Blog this!
